III Job Salaries

Salaries in academic medicine are recorded by region, subspecialty, and rank (Source: AAP Administrators guide).

To give fellows an idea of current salaries, we list data for pediatric rheumatology from 2002-2003.  Because of the small sample size, we have no tabulated data for 'Instructor' positions.  The data below apply to the 'Assistant Professor' position only.  Salaries are reported as 20%, 50%, and 80%.  As an example, let's say the 20% for assistant professors is $90,000.  If an individual has a salary of $90,000, then this individual has a higher salary than 20% of the assistant professors in the field.  If an academic center's policy is to hire graduating faculty at the 20%, then there offer would be about $90,000.  As a rule of thumb, an academic center is going to hire entry level faculty closer to the 20%.  Faculty with years of experience might be hired closer to the 80%.   This listing is intended to give the fellows a general guideline as to what to expect.

National                                      Midwest

      20% $88,500                            20% $88,500

      50% $102,100                          50% $107,300

      80% $120,000                          80% $120,000

Northeast                                    South

      20% $95,200                             20% $97,000

50% $100,000                           50% $98,000

80% $150,000                           80%  $120,800

West

20% $84,900

50% $90,800
