PROJ Fellows' Corner-American Perspective

I INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the first edition of the PROJ Fellows' Corner. We hope that this will be a useful column specifically for fellows. This initial issue will be focused on fellows in the U.S. and Canada but for the next edition we will have the opportunity to gather more input from our international colleagues. We want to help provide important information regarding job searches.  For example, we will try to provide information about the types of jobs in pediatric rheumatology i.e., academic tenure track, non-tenure track, research-oriented positions; both basic science and clinical, as well as more clinically oriented positions.  Also, we will discuss the various funding options.  We are providing names and contact information of some recent graduates from pediatric rheumatology fellowship programs, who are happy to be contacted to advise future graduates.

In this column we give a report from a recent pediatric rheumatology workshop. We hope that in the future we can let people know in advance of up-coming conferences of this sort so more fellows can attend.

Below are the names and contact information of current fellows, we hope it will encourage collaboration for research as well as help in challenging clinical situations.

We would like to thank those who have already offered suggestions and we welcome recommendations for topics for future Fellows' Corners.  We apologize to anyone we missed contacting to obtain permission to be listed for this edition. If you would like your name added to the list of fellows, please contact us and we will list you in the next edition.

IV  Pediatric Rheumatology Fellows Attend Workshop and Family Camp in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada

Dr. Alan Rosenberg, pediatric rheumatologist from Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, hosted a four-day teaching session and camp May 9-12, 2002.  The first two days of the conference were devoted to teaching sessions for pediatric rheumatology trainees.  The fellows participated in anatomy review and practice of joint injection techniques in the gross anatomy lab.  Discussions and lectures touched on "impending discoveries in pediatric rheumatology," "the future of pediatric rheumatology," and "hot topics in pediatric rheumatology."  In addition, 25 cases were presented with the patients in attendance.

The family camp drew patients from all across the Province of Saskatchewan.  Many of the families were from the Canadian Northern Territories where there are no roads.  These patients are routinely flown in for their doctor visits.

Nicole Watt gave opening remarks for the camp.  Nicole is a 16-year-old patient of Dr. Rosenberg's with JRA.  In addition, she is a champion figure skater who has competed on the international level against the likes of Michele Kwan and Sarah Hughes.  Sessions for the parents included discussions on coping with rheumatic diseases, adolescent issues, alternative therapies, school issues, and physical and occupational therapy.  The children were busy with a swimming program, singing, games, and arts and crafts.

The lectures and workshops were run by guest pediatric rheumatology faculty who included Dr. Ronald Laxer from the University of Toronto, Dr. Kiem Oen from the University of Manitoba, Dr. Ross Petty from the University of British Columbia, and Dr. Taunton Southwood from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom.

The trainees in attendance included Dr. Fatma Dedeoglu from Boston Children's Hospital, Dr. Minakshi Chaudhari from Cincinnati Children's Hospital, Dr. Paul Rosen from Cincinnati Children's Hospital, and Dr. Brigitte Dohm from Alberta, Canada.
